Second Landing from Hougang

Written on the landing between the fifth floor and the sixth.

Kovan MRT — where the crowd thins after nine.
Hougang Avenue 5 — my block, lift sometimes moody.
Serangoon Gardens — public-holiday evenings, slow and lit.

12 November 2025

The block felt ordinary until the corridor went quiet

Near Chin Swee Road — sirens, wet road, no answers.

May 2026

Serangoon Gardens on a public-holiday evening

Tables out, radio low, nobody rushing.

April 2026

Sunday at the kitchen table, radio on

Peeling onions, listening without listening.

March 2026

The bus that swings past Hougang LRT

A seat by the window when you are lucky.

February 2026

Groceries up five floors, lift out of service

The handle cuts in; the landing smells of dinner.

January 2026

Closing time at a Kovan coffeeshop

The uncle wipes the counter at 9:40 whether you are finished or not.

I started this page because the stairwell is where I pause — between floors, between errands, between the version of me that talks to the auntie at the market and the version that just wants to sit down. Hougang is not picturesque. It is useful, familiar, and occasionally loud in the way HDB blocks are meant to be.

New notes appear when something sticks — a sound, a detour, an evening that will not settle. I do not publish on a schedule. If the landing is quiet for a while, life is probably loud elsewhere.

The name Second Landing is literal: my block has a half-floor between five and six where the window catches the corridor light and the lift noise softens. I write there because the kitchen is full of dishes and the sofa is full of laundry — the landing has nothing to claim except my attention.
