Rain Check

Plans that slipped — and what happened instead.

Evening light in an HDB corridor

3 August 2026

Plan: Walk to Serangoon Gardens for dinner

Instead: Rain at 6 pm. Ate fish soup at the void deck with the tab open on my lap.

19 July 2026

Plan: Early market run before the heat

Instead: Overslept. Bought vegetables at 10 am from the auntie who pretends to scold me.

2 July 2026

Plan: Call my sister on the park connector

Instead: Phone died at 40%. Sat on a bench and watched joggers instead.

14 June 2026

Plan: Sort the bookshelf properly

Instead: Found a letter I wrote in 2019. Read it twice and left the shelf half done.

28 May 2026

Plan: Take the long bus for no reason

Instead: Got a seat. Fell asleep and missed my stop by one. Worth it.

9 May 2026

Plan: Cook curry from scratch

Instead: Ran out of coconut milk. Made a stew and called it intentional.

22 April 2026

Plan: Write at the coffeeshop till closing

Instead: Uncle closed early for a family dinner. I walked home satisfied anyway.

5 April 2026

Plan: MRT to the library

Instead: Train delay. Read three chapters on my phone standing near the door.

Postponement is a Hougang skill. The weather, the lift, the queue — something always gently reroutes the day. I keep this page as a ledger of soft failures, which are often better outcomes wearing the wrong name.

I add a line when a plan changes shape and the substitute day turns out worth remembering — not every slip qualifies, only the ones that altered my pace.

Some entries are small embarrassments — oversleeping, missing a stop. Others are gentler: rain that keeps you under a void deck with fish soup instead of a restaurant queue. The page is not a complaint ledger. It is proof that alternate versions of a day can be enough.
